Attendance Calculator
Falling behind on attendance sneaks up fast — a few skipped classes here and there, and suddenly you're not sure if you're still eligible for exams. This attendance calculator removes the guesswork: enter your numbers and instantly see your current percentage, how many classes you can still afford to miss, or exactly how many you need to attend to recover.
How to Use This Attendance Calculator
- Enter the total number of classes held so far, and how many you've attended.
- Enter how many classes remain in the term (optional, for forward projections).
- Choose your required attendance target — 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, or a custom percentage from your syllabus.
- Instantly see your current percentage, how many more classes you can miss, or how many you must attend to reach your target.
The Attendance Percentage Formula
Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100
Worked Example
A student has attended 48 out of 60 classes held so far:
- 48 ÷ 60 = 0.80
- 0.80 × 100 = 80%
This student is above a typical 75% requirement, with some buffer before they'd risk falling below it.
How Many Classes Can I Miss?
If you're currently above your required threshold, this calculator works out the maximum number of additional classes you can miss while staying at or above that target — based on how many classes remain in the term.
Worked Example
You've attended 42 of 50 classes (84%), your requirement is 75%, and 20 classes remain this term. Based on the total classes by term's end (70), you can miss up to 5 more classes and still finish at or above 75%.
How Many Classes Must I Attend to Recover?
If your attendance has dropped below the required percentage, this calculator shows the minimum number of remaining classes you must attend — without missing any more — to climb back above your target by the end of the term.
Worked Example
You've attended 28 of 40 classes (70%), your requirement is 75%, and 20 classes remain. To reach 75% of the eventual total (60 classes), you need 45 attended overall. Since you already have 28, you'd need 17 of the next 20 — meaning you can only afford to miss 3 more.
The 75% Attendance Rule
A minimum 75% attendance requirement is one of the most common academic policies at colleges and universities worldwide. Falling below it can mean exam debarment, a grade penalty, or in some cases repeating the course entirely. Requirements vary by institution — some set the bar at 80%, 85%, or 90% instead — so always confirm the exact figure in your syllabus or student handbook rather than assuming 75%.
What If Recovering Your Target Isn't Possible?
Sometimes the math works out so that even attending every single remaining class wouldn't be enough to reach your target percentage by the end of the term. If this happens, the honest next step is talking to your professor or academic advisor as early as possible — options often include medical documentation, supplementary assignments, or a formal appeal to the attendance committee. Catching this early gives you far more options than waiting until the end of the term.
Tracking Attendance Across Multiple Courses
Most students aren't just managing attendance for one class — a typical semester includes four or five courses, each with its own record and sometimes its own requirement. Run this calculator separately for each course rather than averaging them together; attendance eligibility is almost always evaluated per course, not across your overall schedule.
