Curving Methods Explained

Linear / Flat Points

The simplest method — add the same fixed number of points to every score. If the top score was 92% and you want it to reach 100%, add 8 points to every student's raw score. This preserves the exact gap between students; only the whole distribution shifts upward.

Highest-Score-to-100

Set the top scorer's grade to 100%, then scale every other score proportionally using the same ratio. This is common when one strong student's result is used as the benchmark for the rest of the class.

Square Root Curve

Take the square root of the raw score (as a decimal) and multiply by 10. For example: √64 × 10 = 80, and √81 × 10 = 90. This method gives a bigger boost to lower scores than higher ones, making it useful for exams where a significant number of students struggled.

Bell Curve (Z-Score / Statistical Normalization)
